Maureen was a champion in sports and loved rough, athletic sports. She combined this interest with an innate talent for doing shows. Her talent was exemplified by getting almost every Feis award for drama and performances in the theater that her nation offered. Maureen was a part of the Abbey Theater by age 14 in which she was able to pursue her dream of classical and opera. Charles Laughton became captivated with Maureen's hauntingly gorgeous eyes after watching a screen-test. Laughton changed her name to Maureen FitzSimons to Maureen FitzSimons, to "Maureen O'Hara" it was a shorter form of her last name. The name change took place before Laughton made her a part in Jamaica Inn. With a contract signed to Laughton, Maureen's next picture was scheduled to be shot in America (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1939)) through RKO Pictures. Maureen had the opportunity to purchase her contract from Laughton following the film's success. hugely successful. At 19, Maureen was already in two major motion pictures together with Laughton.
